KPM Porcelains as Gifts
KPM porcelain plaques have come to play a part not only in the history of the
art of painting art, but also in the history of diplomacy. The Kings of Prussia
retained ownership of the KPM manufactory, and had a habit of offering KPM
porcelain gifts during official diplomatic visits or for the fulfillment of diplomatic
goals. These gifts included KPM plaques that were surprising not only in their
beauty, but also their very rare large size. The account book of King Friedrich
Wilhelm IV records three plaques that have been given as gifts between the
years 1840 and 1850. One of these plaques was a beautiful depiction of the
view: From the Park of Prince Carl at Little Glienicke Looking toward Potsdam,
believed to have been painted by porcelain plaque artist, Johann Christian
August after C.D. Freydanck.
